Galli Arbel is a creative first, and hotelier second. Her debut hospitality project Hotel Anna & Bel has turned heads and rightfully attracted some unique attention. The hotel's recent collaboration and shoppable stay experience with Anthropologie is the type of boundary-breaking pursuit that proves how much Galli is changing the landscape of boutique hotel design.
When we first began working with Galli, her vision for Anna & Bel was in its early stages, and the property itself was in need of revitalization. Together with her co-founders at Foyer Project, Dor Berkovitz and Dvir Aharon, developers/builders, and Interior Designer, Sigita Stravinskaite, she led the transformation of Anna & Bel into a 50-room boutique hotel.
Below we share an excerpted conversation with Galli about meandering inspiration, honoring the hidden treasures within projects, and how to build community through physical spaces.
Buildings That Whisper Their History
The vision for Hotel Anna & Bel began with the building itself—its quiet character and place within the rhythm of Fishtown. From the start, it felt like a space with stories to tell. "When we first walked through it, we were struck by its beauty and potential—not to erase what was, but to build on it in a way that felt intentional and connected. There was something exciting and humbling within it's walls and we knew that this team had the wherewithal to help tell the story into a new century.", explains Galli as she recalls the process.
"The significance of Anna & Bel is rooted in its role as a conduit between Fishtown's rich history and its dynamic present. We've cultivated an atmosphere that celebrates the local creative community, showcasing the work of area artisans and businesses throughout the hotel."

Galli wanted the hotel to feel like a natural addition to the fabric of the neighborhood. The idea wasn't just to open a hotel, but to create a place where people could experience the spirit of this part of Philadelphia in a thoughtful, welcoming way.
Leaning into Feminine Energy and Evolutions
As we collectively explored the building's past—especially its time as the Penn Home for Indigent Widows—we felt a deep sense of responsibility to honor it. Hence the vision of Anna & Bel's name coming from the streets Susquehanna + Belgrade, but also from a story of potentially two women that contradict yet compliment each other, seeking escape in an urban setting. Galli was particularly keen on exploring this narrative throughout the entire project.
"The feminine history of this space, the stories of the women who lived here and their resilience and strength, inspired us to create spaces that fostered connection and support."

More from Galli - "What was striking was how the building evolved over time. From its origins as The Mansion House to its role as a neighborhood nursing home, each chapter layered new meaning into its walls. This deepened our commitment to preserving the building’s integrity. Ultimately, we envisioned Hotel Anna & Bel as a continuation of its legacy of care and community, reinterpreted for a modern era."
Keeping the Soul, Honoring Important Discoveries
From the beginning, the team was committed to preserving the exterior facade, working closely with the Philadelphia Historical Commission. Reviving it to its original glory was essential to their vision.
"Inside, we saw an opportunity to blend preservation with modern design. Working with Foyer’s interior designer Sigita Stravinskaite and our architecture firm B-March, we created a hotel that felt authentic yet fresh. We uncovered original brick walls, fireplaces, and beams—elements we integrated to add warmth and texture." - Galli
"One discovery that stood out was the original barber shop from the building’s time as the Penn Home. Inspired by its nurturing role, we transformed it into the hotel’s Wellness Room—a space for guests to experience rejuvenation and care.
Another defining moment was the courtyard. We immediately recognized its potential as the heart of the hotel. Adding a pool elevated the space, making it a place for guests to relax and recharge." - Galli
Hospitality That Touches All Five Senses
The Anna & Bel team paid close attention to how design could shape the experience on a multi-sensory level. The communal areas—like the courtyard and lobby—were intentionally designed to encourage interaction. "We used warm, natural materials and soft lighting to create an inviting atmosphere, encouraging guests to linger and connect. A custom hotel scent with notes of Australian Sandalwood, Leather, Fennel, Cardamom, Violet, and Cedar evokes a sense of calm and well-being throughout the hotel. The use of various fabrics—from plush velvet to crisp linen—adds a tactile dimension, while a curated playlist offers a gentle soundscape." - Galli
"For me, hospitality in design goes far beyond aesthetics. It's about creating spaces that resonate on an emotional level, where guests feel genuinely welcomed and cared for. While visual design plays a significant role in our initial perception, true hospitality engages all the senses."

Aiming for the Opposite of Cookie-Cutter
Throughout the hotel, they partnered with local artisans and businesses, showcasing their work and helping guests feel rooted in place. Even hiring us was a nod to Philly homegrown talent!
"Larger brands often prioritize uniformity and standardization, which can feel impersonal and disconnected. In contrast, Anna & Bel celebrates individuality and uniqueness."
—Galli Arbel
Today’s travelers are looking for more than just a place to stay; they seek experiences that feel personal and grounded. Anna & Bel responds to that by blending the layers of Fishtown with the immersive warmth of Mediterranean-inspired design and cuisine.
"Our food and beverage offerings—shaped by Corsican, Sardinian, and regional Mediterranean flavors—offer a sense of escape while remaining grounded in the local context. This comes to life through our onsite restaurant, Bastia, and cocktail bar, Caletta, both designed by partner-chef, Tyler Akin.", Galli.
Independence as a Hospitality Value
"One element that may not be immediately visible—but strongly shapes the experience—is our commitment to the independent traveler. Many of our guests value flexibility and autonomy.", Galli.
