The Butcher’s Daughter is a plant-based restaurant, cafe, juice bar and “vegetable slaughterhouse.” The brand, space, and the food offer what your most favorite friend offers – inspiration. We helped in branding and marketing this plant-based Brooklyn restaurant as they expanded next door to Williamsburg.

The brainchild of partners Aaron Lewis and Shontel Horne, Bonde Mercado is a retail, events, and community concept that links local, regional, and global concepts inspired by the culture and traditions of Black and Brown people.

As a new business concept and idea, 

 engaged Cohere to bring this startup brand to life as the founders embark on their commitment to building community and awareness around POC-owned brands - starting local to Philadelphia, with a global mindset.⁠ Our work consisted of creating the overall brand identity, positioning, and equipping the founders with starting assets to launch their first pop-up events and community-focused gatherings.

The Bonde Mercado mission is simple; to cultivate a vibrant + inclusive marketplace that connects black and brown makers, artists, and entrepreneurs with a diverse community of conscious consumers.⁠

Brand and naming inspiration for Bonde Mercado came from the founder's own travels. The word 

 means Valley in Swahili, inspired by Aaron and Shontel’s visit to the Great Rift Valley in Kenya. They were captivated by the valley's expansiveness, as well as the cultural diversity (the Mediterranean, the Middle East and East Africa) across the 4,000+ mile stretch from Lebanon to Mozambique.


They see a strong cultural parallels for opportunities to unite Black and Brown creators across the Delaware River Valley as well as the entire North East corridor - from DC to Boston - and want Bonde Mercado to be the tool through which those connections are made.

families on-the-go, and anyone who craves a simpler and more flavorful quality of life.

Cohere was engaged to envision a comprehensive brand refresh including all major touch points for consumers online and via meal delivery. We took an approach that achieved three main goals: 

add personality, evoke nostalgia, and add depth

. The result is a personable and flexible brand system that empowers the marketing team to reach new audiences weekly.

We wanted to tap into nostalgia for a past (or not so distant past) where we had more time to cook, dig into a recipe, and prepare a meal for the whole family. Nostalgia for a time we’ve heard about from relatives- when milk was delivered in crates to your door, when you knew the mail carrier’s name. Nostalgia for brands and designs that have stood the test of time - Cuisinart, Kitchenaid, Better Homes & Gardens. This nostalgia feels intertwined with the approach to our food, our brand, and our approach to personal service.

We didn't want to come across as another “VC food delivery company” in a sea of tech-backed startups entering the space. Cohere wanted to ensure that the company was perceived as a homegrown brand owned and operated by local people who cook each family’s meals each week. Visually, we needed to convey more personality through typography, colors, and a whole new inventory of brand photography.

Cohere had the pleasure of working with the Choice team in the initial creation of this Denver-based modern convenience store brand. From identity design, to signage system, packaging, and the digital experience, we knew this brand needed to scale from the very start. Fueled by Founder Mike Fogarty’s vision for a “better version” of the Wawa and classic convenience store model he grew up on in Philadelphia’s suburbs, Choice has truly embodied a fresh take on what convenience should mean.

Choice Market Branding

Di Bruno Bros. newest location in Wayne, PA is an evolution and “best of” version of their specialty grocery stores, full of even more energy and enthusiasm for all things edible. The concept was to create FOOD THEATRE at each station, from Cacio e Pepe and caviar stations, to a compact version of their 

 bar. The entire space was conceptualized and created to translate their 80 year old cheese shop that was born at the Italian Market, to a high-end suburban clientele.

On their 80th year in business, they’ve built an 8,000 square-foot Italian culinary marketplace featuring delicious and eye-catching displays and experiential food shopping experiences. Inspired by their original Italian Market legacy, and old-world European food markets, the newest space offers countless opportunities for guests to taste and sip their way through the immersive experience. Cohere helped to strategize the entire store's brand position – from big picture strategy down to the design details of colors, signage, and materiality. We also told the story with them in a video and content campaign called "Welcome to the Family".

The beloved Italian Market cheese shop opened a Main Line "Food Theatre" on their 80th year anniversary.

"Welcome to the Family", a storytelling campaign that helped reach their new audience members in the Main Line and beyond. Grand opening marketing is essential to grocery or food concept success and Cohere was game for the challenge!

 has been a staple in the Fishtown neighborhood of Philadelphia since 2016, serving the community with local ingredients and produce straight from New Jersey and Pennsylvania. When it came time for them to open their second location in Old City we joined the team to help bring their design-forward Market on Bread Street to life.

From the initial strategy to signage design and content creation, there were a lot of creative components that came out of this to tie the whole experience together.

Our brand strategy and goals were clear: establish a cohesive brand identity by pulling together the existing Riverwards brand with core creative elements and brand guidelines. Create signage that directs customers to the new location, and communicates information effectively once inside, consistent with the updated identity. And ultimately, to ensure longevity and continued success at this second location by providing context and marketing suggestions through a collaborative strategy. The work paid off, and Riverwards continues to serve this new location with its trademark fresh produce, packaged products, and highly personal service.

Riverwards is a home-grown, beloved small batch grocery store with a strong brand and following. They came to Cohere looking to professionalize their signage program, open a second highly anticipated location and do it with even more style than the first. We completed wayfinding designs, signage systems, and custom signage work as well as hosting their grand opening and telling the story along the way.
