The Morris Proper puts New Jersey’s agricultural abundance at the center of the table in Morristown. Built for a town in motion, it brings together local producers, regional chefs, and thoughtful design under one roof. Cohere led the creative direction end-to-end, shaping the name, brand, interiors, uniforms, digital presence, and programming to create a destination that feels entirely of its place.
This project brought together a complex mix of stakeholders, including a real estate developer, a corporate sponsor, and a newly forming hospitality group, each with different priorities and perspectives. Cohere helped align the group around a cohesive long-term vision, ultimately guiding the project away from its original “food hall” concept and toward a more thoughtful hospitality-driven destination designed to better serve the surrounding neighborhood.
Location: Morristown, New Jersey, occupies 12,000 square feet at the M Station West development.
Features: The space includes a 360-degree bar, an outdoor wraparound patio, and an open kitchen.
Opening: The restaurant opened in July 2025, specializing in locally sourced, farm-to-table cuisine.
The Morris Proper was conceived as a local institution, part gathering place and part showcase for the area’s best ingredients and talent. It had to work from morning coffee to market lunches to evening service, while giving chefs and producers a platform to connect with guests.

We arrived at the name The Morris Proper, grounded in location and set in a tone that is confident and exacting. From there, we built an identity system to adapt across service styles, programs, and future expansions. Voice and copy carry the same clarity, built to speak directly to the community it serves.

The interiors were designed by Stokes Architecture + Design in collaboration with Cohere, taking cues from boutique hotels, with distinct zones instead of a single open space. Material choices allow the atmosphere to shift naturally from day to night, leaning into the all-day cafe concept. Signage and uniforms follow the same logic: functional, tactile, and intentionally paced.

"We're not overcomplicating but letting the bounty of New Jersey's farms and waters speak through restraint, care, and balance."

The Morris Proper sets a new model for suburban hospitality, centering local food systems, supporting emerging chefs, and offering space for both daily rituals and special occasions. The brand system was built to handle range, from market service to chef’s table dining.

Each element reinforces the core idea: New Jersey’s agricultural richness is more than a theme—it’s an operating principle. The result draws its identity from the ground it stands on.
